ICSTI, The International Council for Scientific and Technical
Information, held its 1999 General Assembly in Taipei, from
May 6th to May 10th, at the invitation of the Science and Technology
Information Center. Dr. Ruey-Beei Wu, Director of the National
Center for High-performance Computing, was a guest speaker,
invited to tell the group of prominent executives about "Taiwan's
High-performance Research Networks." A very receptive and
attentive audience was fascinated by the scientific applications
carried by the various networks of the next generation. Ways
of utilizing the high-speed networks for cross-border dissemination
of information are very much the interest of ICSTI. Full-text
and patent databases, complete with graphics and images, have
become increasingly common in Digital Libraries that rely on
fast Internet for services.
This
is the first time in its history to have members meet in Asia.
The group recognizes the potential growth in the region and
is actively seeking partners for collaborative development.
At the meeting, Dr. Wu entered into cooperation with the National
Library of Medicine. Dr. Kent Smith, Deputy Director of NLM
and Dr. Elliot Siegel, the Associate Director for Health Information
Programs Development at NLM, were both welcome presence for
the region.
