RFA Issued for vBNS Connections and POP Operation
|
|
Universities, colleges and a few research institutions received
the notification of an RFA (Request for Application) for connecting
to the vBNS. The National Science Council made the announcement
on March 23, 1999. On April 12, the NCHC, the lead institution
charged with implementing advanced internetworking for academia,
was at the NSC to brief a jam-packed audience of eager would-be
applicants from over two hundred institutions. The NSC encouraged
all campuses to upgrade their infrastructure in order to make
the high-speed link. TANet2, the vBNS network, will primarily
link campuses served by TANet. The NSC, which already funds
the transcontinental link to the vBNS, also funds the local
high-speed connections and the operation of the POPs (Point-of-Presence).
Proposals for POPs and for connections were being reviewed.
Domestic Infrastructure for linking up to vBNS was largely completed
by May 1, 1999.
Eight
universities were already linked up to the high-speed backbone.
These include National Taiwan University, National Central
University and National Chiao-Tung University in the North;
National Chung-Hsing University, National Chung-Cheng University,
National Cheng-Kung University and National Sun Yat-Sen University
in the South; and National Dong-Hua University in the east.
Academia Sinica and the National Center for High-Performance
Computing are two research institutions to have enjoyed the
use of the new network early on. More institutions are expected
to join in soon.
