The Department
of Planning and Evaluation of the National Science Council today issued
an RFA to all campuses across the nation. It prompted the universities
to submit proposals for connecting to TANet2. The latter is the new
high-speed Internet service known as vBNS (very high performance Backbone
Network Service), a program first initiated by the National Science
Foundation (US) with which the NSC joined in as a partner last October.
This is the first solicitation of its kind from the NSC.
Further details
of the one-time funding opportunity will be explained in a separate
meeting on April 12, 1999. The National Center for High-performance
Computing, which is the lead agency in implementing and promoting
the link, will hold a Q&A session for interested applicants.
Meritorious applications on the high-speed network will be reviewed
on a competitive basis.
